  14. CUPERTINO, California--January 27, 1993--As part of a continually
  15. increasing commitment by Apple Computer, Inc. to world-class development
  16. tools, Apple and Claris Corp. today announced they will move product
  17. development of future versions of HyperCard into Apple’s Developer Tools
  18. organization in the Apple Developer Group.
  19.     Apple plans to coordinate HyperCard development efforts with its
  20. AppleScript project to give Apple a unified approach to, and a competitive
  21. advantage in, the emerging area of next-generation software-developer
  22. tools.  AppleScript is an advanced scripting technology for integrating
  23. applications to create custom solutions and to automate routine tasks.
  24. It is scheduled for release in the first half of 1993.
  25.     Apple and Claris believe that this strategy assures the best future
  26. for HyperCard and its users.  With HyperCard as a strategic cornerstone of
  27. Apple’s development-tools strategy, developers and users can look forward
  28. to significant investments in future tools for the HyperCard development
  29. community.
  30.     Claris will continue to market, sell, and support the current version
  31. of HyperCard until Apple ships the next version of HyperCard.  At that
  32. time, HyperCard will become an Apple-labeled product and Apple will assume
  33. worldwide responsibility for support of the HyperCard product.  Apple will
  34. ensure a smooth upgrade path to future HyperCard releases to both current
  35. HyperCard users, as well as new customers who buy HyperCard from Claris.
  36.     "HyperCard perfectly complements Apple’s portfolio of developer
  37. tools," said Kirk Loevner, vice president of Apple’s Developer Group.
  38. "HyperCard and next-generation development technologies such as AppleScript
  39. underscore Apple’s long-standing commitment to excellent authoring and
  40. high-level programming tools."
  41.     "This is a very positive move for HyperCard developers and users,"
  42. said Daniel L. Eilers, Claris president and CEO.  "Apple is well-equipped
  43. worldwide to support development tools, developers, and authors, which
  44. makes this an important step forward for HyperCard."
  45.     HyperCard was transferred from Apple to Claris in late 1991.  Since
  46. then Claris has released HyperCard 2.1 with QuickTime extensions, and the
  47. HyperCard Player and the HyperCard Developers Licensing Kit.  There are
  48. currently more than 100,000 active corporate, education, and commercial
  49. HyperCard developers; three million active users; and the quantity and
  50. quality of HyperCard applications are at an all-time high.
